The Scheer crackdown

The Speaker gets tough

by Aaron Wherry

Since explaining his approach to Question Period, Andrew Scheer has intervened twice to cut off questions.

On Tuesday, he stopped this query from Thomas Mulcair. And yesterday, he stopped this query from Conservative MP Bryan Hayes.

In the moment, I thought he might’ve been within his rights and privileges to cut off this question as well, but you can also see how tricky it is to draw lines around what is or is not the proper wording of a question.

The Scheer crackdown

  1. I think the problem is that cutting off the question is not the appropriate punishment.

    • You know what’d work? If any time the speaker cut a question off, the questioner took a 10% pay cut.

  2. Does the Speaker have the right to cut off an answer? Or to rule it non-responsive?
