HBO Wants To Make Blogs Explode

by Jaime Weinman

Here’s what we have to look forward to, probably next year:

Julianne Moore is set to star in HBO Films’ Game Change. Directed by Jay Roach, the movie is based on Mark Halperin and John Heilemann’s 2010 book about the 2008 Presidential elections and follows John McCain’s presidential campaign, from his selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate to their ultimate defeat in the general election.

Danny Strong, who previously wrote the Roach-directed HBO movie Recount, about the aftermath of the 2000 Presidential elections, penned the script for Game Change. Roach is executive producing, with Strong co-executive producing.

Though Moore isn’t great at doing convincing accents (and it’s hard to do a non-caricatured Palin impression anyway), you can see why she’d jump at the chance to play the part and why Strong and Roach want to make this their next project. (Update: See comments. Blaming her for the 30 Rock accent may indeed be unfair.) Particularly since it still looks like Palin might run for President next year, meaning that the film would likely arrive just as her next big campaign is starting up.

But oy, imagine the blog discussions and cable news punditry every aspect of the film will set off, from the announcement to the leaked script details to the actual premiere. Particularly since a big part of Palin’s strategy is to attack pop-culture criticism of herself (or her kids, and it’s hard to imagine that the Bristol Palin pregnancy won’t be part of this story) directly and relentlessly.

  1. "Though Moore isn't great at doing convincing accents (and it's hard to do a non-caricatured Palin impression anyway), you can see why she'd jump at the chance to play the part and why Strong and Roach want to make this their next project. "

HELL, are you only referring to that exaggerated 30 rock accent (which was on purpose obviously)? Have you even seen The End of the Affair? Brilliant, spot-on British accent in a performance that earned her her 2nd Oscar nomination.

  2. Julianne Moore is brilliant. I thought the producers would try to cast a comedian, but instead the casting directors found talent. Sarah Palin should be worried. Sarah Palin will not be President of the United States if Julianne Moore can add truth to her performance as Palin.
