It’s a Trap!

This scene from last night confirms that Admiral Akbar’s line from from Return of the Jedi is now a full-on universally-acknowledged meme. Because I am lacking in Star Wars knowledge, I never used to know what people meant when they would yell “It’s a trap!” and then giggle. But eventually it became clear.

I guess mocking one weird or redundant line in a movie is nothing new. My Dad told me that he and others used to quote a moment in this one movie where Pedro Gonzalez-Gonzalez said “The sheep have come in!” Just quoting “the sheep have come in!” was a meme before the word “meme” was invented.

Actually, “It’s a trap!” references appear to go back to the ’90s, the same time that Dave on NewsRadio was being pilloried by his co-workers for knowing that Boba Fett was an intergalactic bounty hunter.

It’s a Trap!

  1. The memeness of Akbar’s line may be debatable but “pilloried …for knowing that Boba Fett was an intergalactic bounty hunter”??? That makes no sense to me. Not knowing that Boba Fett was an intergalactic bounty hunter is like not knowing that the U.S. was founded in 1776. Or not knowing that da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa. Or not knowing that 2 + 2 = 4.

Most people I know would pillory someone for NOT knowing that Boba Fett was an intergalactic bounty hunter.

And I’m not at all ashamed to say that (lol).

      • …spin, crash, burp…

        lol

    • …”the mememess of Ackbar’s line may be debatable?” Are you freaking kidding me? It’s absolutely a meme, without even a moment of hesitation or doubt I can tell you it’s a meme. That you know what a meme is and not that it’s a trap is one, concerns me. Find better tubes.
      For god’s sake, It’s a tarp is a meme!
since one of you readers wont get it: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/elf_of_doriath9/non-icon%20randomness/its_a_tarp.gif

      • Uhm, I said MAY be debatable, I didn’t say I disputed it. By all means it’s a meme, though I might debate whether it’s a pop culture meme, or just an internet meme that sometimes shows up in pop culture.

There’d be less wiggle room if the authors of the above scene didn’t feel the need to add “Admiral Ackbar from Return of the Jedi“. Ohhh, Admiral Ackbar from Return of the Jedi! I thought you meant Admiral Ackbar from WWI! (LOL)

Good to see that the memeness of “It’s a trap!” can inspire such passion though. I felt kinda fanboyish with my Boba Fett comment, but Mikael has convinced me that I’m not such a huge geek.

  2. It’s a trap!

    • lolz

  3. I think the first reference would have been waaay funnier if it was used in the context of there being an actual “trap”. Just sayin.

    • True, but it’s still pretty funny that that’s the big impersonation he’s been working on (and clearly he’s been working diligently on it!) and it amounts to little more than him just saying the line.

It’s also mildly amusing that her reaction is kinda “Admiral Whatbar from the Return of the Whosit??? I can’t even talk to you fanboy”.
