Harper and Obama announce new regulatory council

Group will work toward “increased regulatory transparency and coordination”

by Luiza Ch. Savage

To advance a vision of “perimeter security”, “Canada and the U.S. intend to establish a Beyond the Border Working Group composed of representatives from the appropriate departments of our respective federal governments.” It will report annually.

They announce the creation of a U.S.-Canada Regulatory Cooperation Council composed of senior officials from both governments to work on “increased regulatory transparency and coordination.”

This will “in no way diminish the sovereignty of either Canada or the U.S.”

This will include early notice of regulations that could have effects across the border and to help make regulations more compatible.

Harper and Obama announce new regulatory council

  1. And another layer of bureaucracy comes into being.

  2. And another layer of bureaucracy comes into being.

    • Considering recent statements by fairly high ranking US 'authorities' demonstrating their ignorance of what Canada has done in recent history to help the US and the nature of our relationship and border situation, perhaps some 'insider contact' would help to clarify and improve out relationship. Chuck.

      • We already have oodles of 'contact'. Layers of it.

Somebody isn't doing their job. We don't need more red tape, we need less.

  3. Something is not right.

Either POTUS and PMSH just wasted several hours doing in D.C. what could have been done with a friggin' e-mail or they are deliberately downplaying what they are up to.

I cannot imagine they are providing a business briefing in Ottawa using the same smoke and motherhood that they just tossed to the media.

  4. You must be new to politics.

Just be glad that they didn't fly to Bora Bora to accomplish the same thing. Take a look at the entire output of the $1 billion G8/G20 conference and tell me that couldn't have been done by email.

  6. What the F is this? Obama, people in the border states don't want more a-hole border guards! It's gotten more and more miserable to pass the border to see our Canadian friends and do business.
    ENOUGH SECURITY THEATER! Weiner 2012!

  9. They were only together for an hour. Came out to exchange motherhood phrases about how good friends we are.
    Nothing on the agreement, zip.

  11. If the new "U.S.-Canada Regulatory Cooperation Council" will "in no way diminish the sovereignty of either Canada or the U.S.", what in the world are they going to do? Create a list of incompatible regulations? And then what?

This is just a weird announcement. If this is the best news they can release then they obviously had quite a few disagreements. It's seeing a co-worker on Monday morning who has a black eye and a cast and asking "so, how was your weekend?", and them telling you that they did some online banking and dusted their apartment. Something else obviously happened.

Seriously, what's the rest of the story?

    • Maybe the rest of the story is simply that each leader thought now was a good time for a photo op.

      • Then where was the EAP backdrop?

        • There wasn't one – I think you may be on to something. This might be good news.

    • Handing over our personal info to "Homeland Security" is not a concern?! I really hope Canadians wake up before it's too late.

  14. Agreed….this is piffle. Annoying piffle at that.

Certainly nothing requiring a meeting. I want to see the fine print.

  17. You know, (contrary to my first reaction) it may actually be that there is precisely as little to this as it appears. It's completely plausible that PMSH went for the brass ring – i.e., something like a substantially thinner border for trade in exchange for a US involvement in our borders and immigration – and Obama told him it simply wasn't a priority for the US. If so, then today is about platitudes and face saving for our guy.

I wonder if Iggy and the LPC are to blame?

    • Precisely. I'm curious what Harper went there to discuss, and what was not agreed upon. That's as useful as what *was* agreed upon, in my mind.

      • Or maybe it was the other way around, Obama didn't get what he wanted from Canada and he is the one who is face saving today.

        • Absolutely. I'm curious about the subject matter, not who may or may not have been rebuffed.

        • Doubt it. Politically there is nothing in this announcement for Obama. The entire potential political benefit and the vast majority of the economic benefit (should anything ever really get done) are to PMSH and Canada, respectively. So, why did POTUS cooperate with this little charade? Gotta be because PMSH gave him something he did want: F-35 "buy" or Afghanistan or…?

  19. who is taking it. I can' t call obama a fudge packer it might be seen as rascist. (Joke obviously)

    • just in case that is confused, what I meant here is that they must have just passed through the presidents security detail… and press security details gave their questions to the press to ask, and there went an hour. Nothing much done. Pretty clear cut here.

  25. So we Canadians have to depend on dysfunctional US immigration laws. Laws in which under Obama's interpretation means ignore movements of illegal immigrants but make sure legal immigrants must sweat? They do not even have a clue nor really care to know about their largest trading partner and their largest source of oil. The idiocy of US policy makers is beyond me, with over 300 milion people, one would think that they would have more political contenders with brains and substance? As US has more Islamic extremists in comparison to Canada, Canadians should worry more about people coming in from that country.

    • We are not their largest source of oil….nor are we worried about 'extremists' attacking us.

    • There were more illegal border crossers moving from the U.S. into Canada last year than the other way around, if recent media stats are to be believed; and that media snippet emerged as a researched result of various U.S. politicians again fretting publicly about the integrity of the Canadian border (more security equipment to push?). Meanwhile, hundreds of illegals jog across the Mexico-U.S. border by foot nightly, unknowing stars on thermal imaging videos posted on the net , while millions more live and work there without benefit of legal immigration status. Sing it…Blame Canada.

    • Your are so right!! Please pay attention to this Canadians!
Us homeland security is a fraud! I just moved back to BC after living in the US for 16 years. This cannot happen, or Canada as we know it will not exsist.

  33. After hearing about Obama and Harper meeting over a perimeter security, I thought about it and concluded this is likely a wise decision. With the Arctic to the north of us, it is time to consider joining forces with USA for security purposes.

Canada as a small country cannot afford to do this on it's own. There is no denying that our 2 countries are targets for different reasons, the worst being terrorist attacks. We cannot keep our heads in the sand on this one. Border traffic at our present borders is too vital to have it subjected to further delays. As Canadians, I am sure we will not allow our Canadian sovereignty to be jeopordized by our esteemed leaders….. we are not Egypt after all.

    • Boy, with all due respect you need to wake up! The USA is a fraud, this might not make much sence right now, but when the real news about what
has gone on in the US, you will understand. Please, for your own sake go online and do some research instead of watching the corporate controlled media for your information.

  35. Part1-

As a concerned Canadian I want absolutely nothing to do with all the craziness south of our border that we as Canadians are force-fed from the day we are born by so-called "CDN" media etc.

All I see is hyper paranoid war mongers with guns. mother kills both children, handguns, shooting innocent children when senator gets shot, handguns, teacher meeting interrupted by V nutjob with handgun, etc. a resent fifth estate? show or whatever on that woman who killed her husband wile hunting?, the NUTJOBS had a stockpile of OVER 100 guns!?! LOL! are you kidding me?! I've owned ONE GUN in my life, a double barrel shotgun, to try hunting, NO I couldn't kill anything! so I sold it. -

    • Please help me get the word out, this is BAD BAD BAD for Canada…..the Us homeland security is out of control! Civil Rights people!!!!!

  36. Part2-

And yet as I said our media & obviously the Conservatives just cant get enough of USA. anything & everything PLASTERED all over our couple of so-called "CDN" news channels etc 24/7/365. the resent state of union a perfect example, PLASTERED all over CBC,CTV,CPAC etc despite the fact that the MAJORITY of AMERICAN channels are already showing the FOREIGN leaders speech, why?. do you think the Americans are forced to watch our PM make a speech every time he does?… LOL! NOT A CHANCE IN HELL!, they could care less!.

Trade blah blah trade blah……… I KNOW OK?! we know! Canadians know!. but just because we do allot of trade with the US does that mean we have TO BE THE US?. NO!.

Now being PRO-Canadian, pro Canadian IDENTITY, CULTURE, HUMAN DECENCY, makes me anti-American? then so be it!.

    Third Option.

    • Im with you!!! This cannot happen or Canada is no longer a sovereign nation!

  46. This is serious. I have been reading that the reason for this "security perimeter," which in reality reduces security at the borders, is to make it easier for BIG BUSINESSES to control more of Canada's resources.
The only thing we can do is the following:

    1. Contact your local Corporate Media and demand coverage of this story – but remember that the person you are talking to is not to blame; the owners are to blame.

    2. Contact your local politician and find out what they are doing about this.

    3. Inform yourself, and inform your friends and family.

    4. Support democracy and free media where ever you find them.

  48. Conservative government has become the most immediate arch enemy of the continuation of canada. We have many problems with existing trade deals that need to be fixed. Stop making trade deals. Fix the broken ones or abrogate them altogether. If the liberals win this election ( I hope they do) we must watch and keep them accountable to canadians as well. Absolutely the conservatives must be voted out. We really are loosing our country to big business and the USA. I voted conservative when they came into power and everytime since. No more. The end game is clear now. Big business and usa demands are taking too much precedence in canada with no end in sight. Big business has been one of the usas biggest problems for decades. The same problems are being fast tracked into canada by the harper government undemocratically. This will not fix usas problem with big business. It will acced canada to the american way and trump canadian sovereignty. Some peoples are dominated politically by religion, a very bad scenario. Some countries are dominated by big business. This is an equally bad scenario with the added loss of sovereignty attached. The conservative government must be stopped in its tracks now.
