Obama wants ‘conversation’ on climate change

by Luiza Ch. Savage

At his press conference today, President Obama was asked whether he believes that in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the political will exists to pass climate change legislation or a carbon tax. He answered:

“We can’t attribute any particular weather event to climate change. What we do know is the temperature around the globe is increasing faster than was predicted even 10 years ago. We do know that the Arctic ice cap is melting faster than was predicted even five years ago. We do know that there have been an extraordinarily large number of severe weather events here in North America, but also around the globe.

And I am a firm believer that climate change is real, that it is impacted by human behavior and carbon emissions. And as a consequence, I think we’ve got an obligation to future generations to do something about it.

Now, in my first term, we doubled fuel efficiency standards on cars and trucks. That will have an impact. That will a lot of carbon out of the atmosphere. We doubled the production of clean energy, which promises to reduce the utilization of fossil fuels for power generation. And we continue to invest in potential breakthrough technologies that could further remove carbon from our atmosphere.

But we haven’t done as much as we need to. So what I’m going to be doing over the next several weeks, next several months, is having a conversation, a wide-ranging conversation with scientists, engineers and elected officials to find out what more can we do to make short-term progress in reducing carbons, and then working through an education process that I think is necessary: a discussion, the conversation across the country about what realistically can we do long term to make sure that this is not something we’re passing on to future generations that’s going to be very expensive and very painful to deal with.

I don’t know what either Democrats or Republicans are prepared to do at this point, because, you know, this is one of those issues that’s not just a partisan issue. I also think there are regional differences. There’s no doubt that for us to take on climate change in a serious way would involve making some tough political choices, and you know, understandably, I think the American people right now have been so focused and will continue to be focused on our economy and jobs and growth. If the message is somehow we’re going to ignore jobs and growth simply to address climate change, I don’t think anybody’s going to go for that. I won’t go for that.

If, on the other hand, we can shape an agenda that says we can create jobs, advance growth and make a serious dent in climate change and be an international leader, I think that’s something that the American people would support.

So you know, you can expect that you’ll hear more from me in the coming months and years about how we can shape an agenda that garners bipartisan support and helps move this — moves this agenda forward.

Obama wants ‘conversation’ on climate change

  1. I think we’ve got an obligation to future generations to do something about it.

I bet that prescient SOB is planning a JOB KILLING CARBON TAX!

    • Can’t tell if sarcasm…

      • It is. Just look at Pickngrin’s post history.

    • Kinda sounds like a “CO2 death threat” to billions of helpless children doesn’t it? There must be a better way to keep the kidies environmentally aware than this fear mongering of climate change.

  2. Obama is a brave man. I hope he survives this. Deniers aren’t known for their sanity.

    • Climate crisis is real all right, really not a crisis and just a new Reefer Madness.

*In all of the debates Obama hadn’t planned to mention
      climate change once.

*Obama has not mentioned the crisis in the last two State of
      the Unions addresses.

*Occupywallstreet does not even mention CO2 in its list of
demands because of the bank-funded carbon trading stock markets run by
      corporations.

*Julian Assange is of course a climate change denier.

*Canada’s voters had already killed Y2Kyoto with a freely
elected climate change denying prime minister and nobody cared, especially you
fear mongers and the millions of scientists warning us of unstoppable warming
      (a comet hit).

      • I’m afraid science says otherwise. But like I pointed out, Deniers are crazy people.

        • No they only agree that it “could” be a crisis because they never say it’s real without qualifying it with a “maybe”. Always. Deny that.
We the former believer voting majority are happy a crisis wasn’t real, for whatever reason.

          • It’s been a crisis for quite some time now….and science doesn’t say ‘maybe’.

Take the bananas out of your ears.

And stop putting this crap on all the websites you can find…..you look ridiculous.

          • Find me one single IPCC crisis warning that’s without the “maybes”. Just one! Only a comet hit could be worse so it’s crisis yes or no, not might or could be or maybe. Deny that. Help my house could be on fire maybe? Did we WANT this misery to have been real.

          • Do you think the millions of people in the global scientific community are acting like they condemned their kids as well to a CO2 he!! on Earth? Exaggeration of climate change is good news, for most planet lovers.

Climate change was exaggerated and therefore not a crisis
because you can’t have a little crisis.

Be happy for the planet and the billions of children and love the planet with real love, not real hate and fear because supporting this CO2 death threat and needless panic isn’t helping anyone or the
            planet.

          • If you want to appear stupid in public it’s up to you.

  3. Canada and Prime Minister Harper are in an excellent position to help President achieve his agenda of delivering clean energy and clean water to the USA .
The biggest obstacle are the dirty politics in British Columbia which will soon be resolved when the mainstream m,edia shows the courage to expose the massive deciet behind the Water War Crimes
    http://www.waterwarcrimes.com/4/post/2012/11/president-obamaprime-minister-harper-premier-christy-clark-and-water.html

    • This is about “climate change”, the 26 year old CO2 threat to billions of children’s lives, not about energy clean or otherwise. Climate blame was an exaggeration and Liberalism has moved on. Life is better than we thought. Our air is cleaner and the future looks bright.

*In all of the debates Obama hadn’t planned to mention
      climate change once.

*Obama has not mentioned the crisis in the last two State of
      the Unions addresses.

fear mongers and the millions of scientists warning us of unstoppable warming
      (a comet hit).

  4. How far to the brink will science takes us before they say climate change crisis “WILL” happen, not just might happen? When it’s too late?
    Exaggeration isn’t a lie, yet.
    Good News Fellow Planet Lovers:
Science only agrees it “could” be a crisis of unstoppable warming and over the last 26 years of research has never said this comet hit of an Earthly emergency “WILL” happen. Not one single IPCC warning of crisis is NOT peppered with; “maybe” and “could be” and “likely” etc. Not one.
And save the little tiny catastrophic climate crisis for a Harry Potter movie or the omen worshippers. You can’t have a little crisis. A crisis that isn’t a crisis isn’t a crisis. Be happy it was exaggerated, not disappointed.
HELP MY PLANET COULD BE ON FIRE MAYBE?
Not a good enough reason to condemn my kids to the greenhouse gas ovens of the climate change exaggeration. It wasn’t a lie, it was a liberal virtue.

  5. Global Warming Stopped Sixteen Years Ago:

The world stopped getting warmer almost 16 years ago, according to new data released last week. The figures, which have triggered debate among climate scientists, reveal that from the beginning of 1997 until August 2012, there was no discernible rise in aggregate global temperatures. This means that the ‘plateau’ or ‘pause’ in global warming has now lasted for about the same time as the previous period when temperatures rose, 1980 to 1996. Before that, temperatures had been stable or declining for about 40 years.

    Hurricanes And Global Warming:
To summarize, claims of linkages between global warming and hurricane impacts are premature for three reasons. First, no connection has been established between greenhouse gas emissions and the observed behavior of hurricanes.

    Daily Telegraph Nov 11 2012
Arctic summer sea ice reached a minimum 3.41 million sq km this year, around 50 per cent lower than the 1979-200 average. However a study by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and NASA found sea ice in the Antarctic has been increasing over the same period. The study, published in Nature Geoscience, shows for the first time how winds in the Antarctic cause the change in sea ice cover.

  6. How many climate change believers does it take to change a light bulb?
None, but they do have full consensus that it will change.

  7. You remaining believers wouldn’t be shooting your mouths off like this still if there were real legal consequences for condemning billions of helpless children to the greenhouse gas ovens of your disco science lie and exaggeration. Who was the fear mongering neocon again? At least Bush didn’t terrorize my kids with any “CO2 death threats”.
Be real planet lovers and rejoice at the good news that the suffering anticipated of a CO2 climate crisis was an exaggeration after all. Life is good. You can’t love a planet with fear.

    • Not doing a lot to dispel the “deniers are crazy” idea put forth above, are you?

      • Who are the end of the world freaks?

        • Nutbar religious types waiting to be raptured.

          • Climate Change Belief is another speed bump on the road to knowledge.

Climate blame believers are the bible thumpers because they know nothing of the issue except the trusted “WORDS” of the saintly scientists. You doomers bow unquestionably to the grunt of; “all of science says it is so..” like ancient omen worshippers.

Are you fear mongers the least bit embarrassed at the fact that there does not exist one single IPCC warning that isn’t peppered with maybes and couldbes and likelys….?

Climate change is the new Reefer Madness and history is watching this mass insanity of climate control.

        • Yes I see the signs. The signs are all around me. The Earth is changing. The change is real. The end is near. We are doomed. We cannot deny the change…….said the end of the world freak.

          • Say hello to Peter Pan for me, eh?

  8. Really sad that we have to keep bothering with this charade in 2012. What happened to separation of church and state?

  9. Ug ug cave man see warm cave man put out fire to please
    angry weather gods ug ug.

“Yes I see the signs. The signs are all around me. The Earth is changing. The change is real. The end is near. We are doomed. We cannot deny the change.” …… said the end of the world freak. Or should it be just a modern day “omen worshipper”?

Climate Blame; the new Reefer Madness

“The scientists say it is real. Only the scientists know for sure and we must trust them.”? Can we separate religion from government please? Can we evolve?

    • Your tinfoil hat is too small. You’ve left your mouth exposed.

      • -How close to the point of no return from unstoppable
warming will the world of science take us before it too late to say it “WILL”
        happen not just might happen?

-Find us one single IPCC warning that isn’t peppered with “maybe”
and or “could be”, “might be” and “likely” etc.

HELP MY HOUSE COULD BE ON FIRE MAYBE?

-Science agrees it is real but does not agree it “will” be a
crisis as every single scientist and organization has their own unique views on
the “effects” (almost never causes) of Human CO2. How is that consensus of
        anything?

-The exaggeration of climate change was a lab coat consultant’s
wet dream, a lazy copy and paste news editor’s prayer and ridden hard for 26
years for political gain by all sides.

Climate change; the new Reefer Madness.

Meanwhile, the entire world of SCIENCE, lazy copy and paste
news editors and obedient journalists, had condemned our kids to the greenhouse
gas ovens of an exaggerated “crisis” and had allowed bank-funded and
corporate-run “CARBON TRADING STOCK MARKETS” to trump 3rd world fresh water
relief, starvation rescue and 3rd world education for just over 26 years of
        insane attempts at climate CONTROL.

*In all of the debates Obama hadn’t planned to mention
        climate change once.

*Obama has not mentioned the crisis in the last two State of
        the Unions addresses.

*Canada killed Y2Kyoto with a freely elected climate change
denying prime minister and nobody cared, especially the millions of scientists
warning us of unstoppable warming (a comet hit).

  10. Climate Change Belief is just another speed bump on the road to knowledge.

Climate blame believers are the bible thumpers because they know nothing of the issue except the trusted “WORDS” of the saintly scientists. You doomers bow unquestionably to the grunt of; “all of science says it is so..” like ancient omen worshippers.

Climate change is the new Reefer Madness and history is watching this mass insanity of climate control.

  11. How dare you fear mongers scare my kids like this. You doomers don’t love the planet, you hate humanity and want to just drag us all down with you in your miserable lives with your imagined fanatsy of climate crisis. Climate change belief is the problem.

  12. Man! anytime the comment post count shots up this high on a non Colby post, you know it’s full of crazy nutbar rants.
