Islamists, Iran, and a “Just and Sustainable Peace” — media response

The National Post and the Ottawa Citizen have editorials. (The Post acknowledged that Maclean’s broke the story; the Citizen did not.)

Lorne Gunter has a column.

The Citizen covered last night’s conference.

Here is the original story.

Islamists, Iran, and a “Just and Sustainable Peace” — media response

  1. From the Ottawa Citizen report (link above):

Organizer Paul Maillet said the Ottawa Group of Four invited the Iranian speakers to the conference because they felt it was important to include people with controversial points of view in dialogue about peace.
"The people you want to talk to are the people with whom you have differences. These people are not here to speak for their governments," he said.
Maillet said the Iranian panelists were more than just government mouthpieces and maintained it was possible for them to speak their minds.
"We'll have to see what kind of courage they have. There is a way. They can find a way," he said.

I still await Maillet's justification for the RCMP being a part of all this — maybe he can come back to Michael's original post – or come to this one – and take a stab at it.

    • Not only that, it's the exact opposite of what they'd say the rest of the time. On the one hand, they'll say "it was important to include people with controversial points of view in dialogue about peace". Then on the other hand, the London Congress Center will shut out Maclean's writer Mark Steyn from speaking there, because he is supposedly "controversial".

To be fair, I'm conflating two separate groups of people. But really, there's no question that their excuse is a laugh in more ways than one. For instance, if they really wanted all points of view they'd find a speaker who has been persecuted in Iran (and there are plenty such people around).

  2. Our tax dollars should not be funding the Green Party – especially if it contains these whacko's. They want forums to legitimize the views of brutal regimes instead of outright condemnation of brutality? How dumb can these people be? United Nations dumb?
