A royal brooch’s journey from Saskatchewan to Norfolk
Three months after Saskatchewan’s Lieutenant-Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield presented the Queen with a brooch created by local designer Rachel Mielke of the Hillberg & Berk jewellery line, Her Majesty wore the brooch pinned to a pink tweed coat at church in King’s Lynn, Norfolk. For a monarch who always wears a brooch, and who loves wearing pink, it was the perfect gift.

Hillberg & Berk
Mielke’s contemporary flower design featuring five irregular petals of tourmaline in shades of pink, set into 18-karat white gold. Each petal is surrounded by diamonds—300 in total, with a white freshwater cultured pearl at the centre of the flower. It’s modern, but not too avant-garde for the 87-year-old monarch. The cost—$15,000 in total—was absorbed by the design firm.
