What it is: a long-delayed route to transport crude from Hardisty, Alta., to Steele City, Neb. The route hooks up to pipelines that eventually feed refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Why it’s needed: The 91-cm pipe would substantially increase the volume of crude exports from northern Alberta. Proponents say it’s a safe way to create thousands of jobs.

Why it may not get built: U.S. President Barack Obama has refused to approve the project, which is mired in Nebraska courts filled with landowners unwilling to sell their land to TransCanada. Nick Taylor-Vaisey
