13. Laurentian University
Laurentian University was once only a regional school serving Sudbury, a boom-and-bust mining town that could soon boom again if Ontario develops the Ring of Fire, a treasure trove of minerals in the far north of the province that the city is poised to help extract. While Laurentian still serves its region well, it has grown into an international leader in niches such as stressed watershed systems, rural and northern children’s health, particle astrophysics and, naturally, mining.
