Mount Saint Vincent University: Lesbian pulp-fiction collection
Students of cultural studies, women’s studies and sociology—plus anyone else looking for a little literary titillation—can slip into a pair of white gloves and flip through this trove of vintage lesbian pulp. More than 120 rare originals capture a brief moment of 1950s-era counterculture, as the genre would fade by the mid-’60s with the dawn of gay rights and the decriminalization of homosexuality. Still, the legacy remains: Patricia Highsmith’s The Price of Salt—a favourite—inspired this year’s Cannes-award-winning film Carol.
