Gordon Campbell writes-off higher education in cabinet shuffle

British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell announced his election cabinet in a shuffle today.

I immediately looked for who the new minister of advanced education would be.

Turns out the new minister is same as the old. I guess Campbell does not care about higher education this election cycle.

Gordon Campbell writes-off higher education in cabinet shuffle

  1. Murray Coell’s new title is “Minister of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development.” According to the government’s web site, his responsibilities include:
    – Post-secondary financing
    – Post-secondary policy and accountability
    – Student financial assistance
    – Immigration policy
    – Labour market policy and strategy
    – Provincial Nominee Program
    – Work BC
    – BladeRunners
    – Industry training
    – Public Service Agency
    – Public Sector Employers’ Council Secretariat

That’s quite a range of subjects, and I am afraid that Mr. Coell might not have enough time to focus on post-secondary education. For example, as minister responsible for the Public Service Agency, Mr. Coell is responsible for representing the government as employer in relation to its employees and their unions.

  2. BladeRunners?

He handles the termination of androids that have outlived their usefulness?

Or is that just the same thing as the Public Service Agency?

“BLADERUNNERS is an internationally recognized, award winning employment program assisting multi-barrier and disadvantaged youth in gaining on the job construction training and apprenticeships. Participants are referred by pre-employment programs, past and/or present BLADERUNNERS and community organizations. BLADERUNNERS is a non-partisan program that works in partnership with ACCESS, Employers, Trades Organizations, Unions, Community Organizations, Government and the Aboriginal Community to increase opportunities for youth in British Columbia.”
