Memorial University has decided beer companies will no longer be allowed to sponsor student residence houses. In past years, beer companies such as Molson and Labatt would sponsor dormitories, offering free beer, taxi vouchers and other perks, for being the only beer supplier at house events.
Christine Burke, director of housing services at Memorial, told CBC News that residence managers decided to ban the beer companies this semester because about 64 per cent of student residents were not 19, the legal drinking age in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“The concern was that there was too much access to too much product,” Burke said. “We decided to talk to the beer companies and ask them not to give any sponsorship.”
However it’s a move that students aren’t fully supporting. The Student Union at Memorial University is opposed to the ban on beer sponsorships in residences.
