Ont. Gov: Not our problem, they are autonomous

Ontario’s Minister of Training, Colleges, and Universities is dismissing the idea of provincial bargaining for university employees in Ontario. He cites the “autonomy” of universities as one of the reasons the provincial government will not involve itself.

When did academic freedom (autonomy) include the finances of the university itself?

Of course, the big concern with province-wide bargaining is the strength in numbers it gives the union side.

  1. This is ludicrous, ridiculous, ask any parent of a student attending York or a parent of a student supposed to graduate in December. So much money and time wasted, so much aggravation. Now who knows when my daughter will be able to graduate!

    This is so unfair.

And our government is washing their hands of this…how typical!

  2. ‘autonomy’ is not just referring to academic freedom.. universities are increasingly dealing with millions of private dollars, so financial autonomy is important to many board of governors.

  3. ‘autonomy’ is not just referring to academic freedom.. universities are increasingly dealing with millions of private dollars, so the ability to determine finances is extremely important to many board of governors

  4. Perhaps this would be a good opportunity to reel in these increasingly autonomous universities.
