Plane lands safely on NY highway
A 24-year-old flight instructor is getting top marks for his emergency landing on a narrow stretch of highway in upstate New York during a trip from Toronto to Burlington, Vt..Michael Denning was flying in a single-engine plane with two of his students from Toronto’s Seneca College when the engine cut out.
Denning says his training kicked in and he quickly realized they were too far from the nearest airport.
He says he had a choice between landing in trees, on water, or on Interstate 87, close to the town of North Hudson near Lake Placid.
Denning says the plane was gliding only 15 metres above two transport trucks before he brought it down safely in the highway’s northbound lanes.
Federal Aviation Administration officials are investigating what caused the 1992 Beechcraft Bonanza’s engine to fail.
