UWinnipeg students back profs in possible strike

‘It does suck — it really does — but it sucks for the professors because they are seriously underpaid’

University of Winnipeg students interviewed by the Winnipeg Free Press, say that while the possibility of a strike is undesirable, they support the faculty. “It does suck — it really does — but it sucks for the professors because they are seriously underpaid,” third-year psychology student Ashley Shewchuk said. Another student said, “I really do support the faculty because there are valid reasons here and they are doing a great job.” The students’ association is also backing faculty. “It’s in the best interests of students to have well-paid professors who are happy to be here. They want to see the university competitive for staff,” one student vice-president said. U of W professors, who are paid less than faculty at other Manitoba universities, voted yesterday to set a strike deadline of March 9.
