Does anyone really miss telephone directories and computer solitaire?
The Daily Telegraph lists 50 things that have been killed off by the rise of the internet. (The actual telegraph is not one of them; that was killed off before the internet.) Many of those are social practices like “watching television together” and “the art of polite disagreement,” while others include “the myth of cat intelligence,” which has been definitively disproven by the LOLCats phenomenon. Many of these changes may be for the better; does anyone really miss telephone directories, computer solitaire, or “trust in Nigerian businessmen and princes?” However, # 34 on the list of things that the internet has destroyed is “mainstream media.” And some of us may miss that one just a bit.
