Alberta Liberals grow cojones

Yet another sign Alberta politics are suddenly interesting: A dynamite political ad

Sleek, hard-hitting and from an unlikely source—the Alberta Liberals, whose leader David Swann frowns upon heckling in the legislature—this campaign-style attack ad arrives just days after Danielle Smith captured the leadership of the right-wing Wildrose Alliance Party. If Smith’s ascendancy appears to have caught the Stelmach Tories flatfooted—as though they couldn’t see that one coming—it has energized the provincial Liberals, who are now employing exaggeration (does Alberta really have a $10 billion deficit?) and cloak-and-daggerisms (what is the albertaliberalcaucus, really?) with abandon.

Alberta Liberals grow cojones

  1. Riiiight, the party with the 'friends of medicare' crackpot leading it will be going nowhere. The libs could have voted for the quite reasonable Dave Taylor but chose the extreme left instead.

  2. The Separation Party of Alberta has a better shot of winning an election in Alberta then the Liberals do.

  3. Agreed, there's probably another decade or so of irrational PET hatred left before enough people die off that we can get back to actually examining what's up for offer in government.

  4. Why is PET hatred irrational?

  5. Because the NEP didn't kill Alberta. It didn't help, I'll admit, but the damage came from the world price in oil and a government that had, for years, ignored the perils of having an economy almost entirely reliant on a single resource. Of course, that didn't play well for re-election, and the West-East dischord and PET/NEP was a beautiful excuse that allowed all the people of the province the convenience of laying the blame for our troubles elsewhere instead of taking a look at our own economy in Alberta and realizing it's not a sustainable one.

They're still having trouble with it, with gov't continuing to bend over backward for the oil industry even as our cattle ranching industry dies.

    • Wrt the NEP: I made the same case to a current government MLA a few days ago; he smiled and nodded in agreement. Of course to get them to say that "out loud" is quite a different matter.

  6. Good stuff. I agree.

  7. Farmer Stelmach is a fiscal conservative?

  8. Saying David Swann is to the Far left is why people can’t trust the internet for accurate information. He is actually closer to the centre than many people realize. Your statement sounds like a personal jab instead of an educated thought.

  9. I love all these lefties who crap all over Bush for a "1 trillion dollar deficit". Um. No. Under Bush the deficit was $452 billion when he left office. Obama — the biggest lefty-Lib there is — has ballooned that to 1.42 billion which is due to his 1 trillion dollar "stimulus" package that has done zippo for the American economy. Give me a "fiscal conservative" any day versus these idiot lefties who claim they have all the answers.

  11. The stimulus package and bank bailouts were necessary because of the recession that Bush caused, buying his way out of the 2001 tech crash and 9/11 crisis of confidence with artificially low interest rates.

  12. The bailouts are necessary because of the bailouts.

  13. I suspect it will take some time before albertans grow a brain. that is after all the precondition to their overthrow of their current one party state.

  14. It may be a provincial Liberal message, but it's quite national in its references and may do the federal Liberals some good in AB too.

  15. Ha! Have you ever been to Alberta? Do you know that the Liberal brand is toxic here? A little left wing montage won't change that.

  16. $10B is more accurate than $6.9B. The “official” # excludes deficits at both the health superboard and postsecondary.

  17. After years of having french liberal idiots in the PMO, I sure as hell don't want them anywhere near the levers of power in Alberta.

The last good liberal in Alberta was Decore, and Swann is an idiot that isn't fit to shine his shoes..
