And the verdict is . . .

One more day before fate of Ottawa’s mayor revealed

Ottawa mayor Larry O’Brien will learn his fate tomorrow morning when Justice Douglas Cunningham delivers his verdict in what has been billed as the capital’s trial of the century—at least so far. The Ottawa Citizen provides a summary of the charges that the former tech mogul turned unlikely municipal politician is facing, including extensive analysis from local lawyer Michael Rankin, who says he’s “expecting an acquittal.” If he’s right, O’Brien will return to City Hall to finish out his term, but if he’s not, and O’Brien is convicted of either of the offences with which he’s accused, not only will he be obliged to step down immediately, but he could also be facing jail time.
