Belgium edges closer to burka ban

Parliament becomes first in Europe to prohibit Islamic face coverings

Belgium is on track to becoming the first European nation to ban Islamic burkas. “We are the first country to break through the chain that has kept countless women enslaved,” says Denis Ducarme, an MP for the Belgian Liberal party. But human rights groups are voicing concerns about what they see as an infringement on religious freedom. The measure, which after passing in Parliament, must be approved by the Senate after general elections in June to become law, comes as France is eyeing similar legislation.
