Bloody civilian attack in Sri Lanka

The military and Tamil rebels blame each other for the weekend’s casualties

An artillery attack in Northern Sri Lanka has killed 378 Tamil civilians and wounded over a thousand others. Meanwhile, the military denies the attack and the use of heavy artillery, blaming the Tamil rebels of conducting it themselves for sympathy. A doctor in the area said it was the bloodiest day he had seen in months—and certainly one of the most deadly attacks in the last three years of civil war.
