Bruce Carson was top adviser on Afghanistan

Former PMO official granted access to sensitive military files

Bruce Carson served as Stephen Harper’s main adviser on Afghanistan and had access to sensitive information about the military mission according to a report in the Toronto Star. The paper’s source described Carson’s role as chiefly concerned with managing perceptions of the mission at home rather than operations on the field. “The PMO micromanaged the whole thing,” the source said. “They were always a bloody handful to deal with.” Harper says he knew about Carson’s fraud convictions in the early 1980s, but says he would not have hired him had he known about Carson’s subsequent convictions for fraud and court-ordered psychiatric treatment in 1990.
