Canada’s silver lining

World Junior squad drops gold-medal game to the U.S.

Canada’s streak of gold medals at the World Junior Hockey Championship came to an abrupt halt last night when the Canadian squad lost 6-5 in overtime to its American rivals. For a while, Canada looked like it wouldn’t even get that far—the team had to rally late in the third period to overcome a 5-3 deficit, with Edmonton Oilers prospect Jordan Eberle scoring both goals. But it wasn’t enough. Just over four minutes into the extra frame, U.S. defenceman John Carlson kept the puck on a three-on-one and snapped a shot past the Canadian netminder. “I just closed my eyes and let it rip,” confessed the 19-year-old Carlson, who played three games for the Washington Capitals earlier this season. “I think I got a little lucky.”
