Canadians against using tax money on sports stadiums

Poll finds a slim majority oppose push for federal investment in pro sports facilities

A Harris-Decima survey shows a majority of Canadians don’t want the federal government paying for professional sports facilities. The poll found 55 per cent of respondents oppose using federal tax dollars to fund such projects, while 41 per cent support the idea. At 62 per cent, opposition was highest in Alberta and Manitoba-Saskatchewan, despite burgeoning campaigns in those provinces to have Ottawa invest in sports facilities in Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, and Regina. Meanwhile, support was highest in Quebec, where officials are lobbying the federal government for money to build an NHL-ready arena in Quebec City.
