Cannon departs campaign trail for Libya talks

Foreign minister sent top civil servant in his place last month

Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon is leaving the campaign trail for two major international conferences on the Libyan crisis this week. Cannon will be attending a meeting of the NATO contact group in Doha, involving the core group of countries engaged in the Libyan mission, and a general meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Berlin. Last month, Cannon was criticized for campaigning at a time when Canadian fighter jets were directly engaged in overseas military operations. Cannon sent his top civil servant, Morris Rosenberg, to attend a March 29 conference in London on the Libyan crisis as Canadian fighter jets were conducted air raids with coalition allies, while he continued to campaign for re-election with the Conservative party.
