Carly Rae Jepsen cancels Boy Scouts concert to support gay rights

Carly Rae Jepsen has cancelled a scheduled appearance at the Boy Scouts of America Jamboree over the organization’s policy not to allow openly gay members or leaders.

The Canadian pop star who sings the hit “Call Me Maybe” made the announcement on Twitter Tuesday in three tweets.

Jepsen wasn’t the only star to bow out of the show, which is held once every four years and is expected to draw up to 45,000 fans.

Rock band Train has also said it won’t play the show in a statement on its website: “When we booked this show for the Boy Scouts of America we were not aware of any policy barring openly gay people from participation within the organization. Train strongly opposes any kind of policy that questions the equality of any American citizen. We have always seen the BSA as a great and noble organization. We look forward to participating in the Jamboree this summer, as long as they make the right decision before then.”

As for the Boy Scouts of America, its director of publicity Deron Smith said that the organization respects “everyone’s right to express an opinion.”

The Boy Scouts were going to address the question of gay members in February, but they delayed the decision until an annual meeting in May where 1,400 members will be able to vote on the issue.

The decision is controversial because the Boy Scouts of America receives funding from religious groups, many of which oppose homosexuality.

  1. I was a member of the Boy Scouts for many years. It was, and still is, a great organization. We were lucky that the leaders of our troop weren’t gay. It just wouldn’t have worked out. Other troops, who were infiltrated by homosexual predators, were not so fortunate.

    • I think the term you are looking for is “pedophiles”? There is a distinct difference…

      • Keith,
No that’s not the ‘term’ I’m looking for. If you take the time to google or look up the word pedophile/pedophilia in a dictionary, you’ll find that it refers to both sexes desiring to have sex with underage children, and is not exclusive to men only. The word homosexual refers to those who desire having sex with those of their own sex. The ‘term’ homosexual predators, in my post, referred to men only. Perhaps I could have been more circumpsect by stating it as male homosexual predators, but I wanted to emphasize the word predator instead of pedophile. I just assumed that most people would be able to see the ‘disitinct difference’ between the two terms even though I didn’t spell it out for them.. I hope that clears up any misconceptions that someone else might have when reading it. Thanks.

        • The distinction I am making is that the vast majority of gays, just like the straight population, do not prey on young boys. Hence, whether gay or straight, the term is “pedophile”. It is no more disgusting to prey on children of the opposite sex than the same sex; both are equally reprehensible.

Your “distinction” seems aimed at improperly tarring the entire gay population; a typical anti-gay tactic.

(And no, before you jump to conclusions here, I’m straight. Not that it should matter.)
