The news may cheer Olympics fans across the country, as some had speculated no Canadian broadcaster would be able to afford the broadcast rights, forcing Canadians to tune in to NBC or another international channel for Olympic coverage.
Although CBC president Hubert Lacroix could not offer detailed costs of the deal, he said that the bid was “very financially and fiscally responsible”
The CBC was Canada’s Olympic broadcaster for over 50 years, until CTV outbid the national broadcaster for the Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 Olympic games.
Although the 2010 games had very high ratings, and the mens’ hockey final was the most widely viewed hockey game in the last 30 years, CTV still lost money on the contract.
