Champion of right-wing America lashes out at Canadian university

Ann Coulter accuses U of O of promoting hatred against conservatives

Ann Coulter is all riled up again. Her latest target: the University of Ottawa. Coulter is scheduled to speak at the U of O Tuesday night as part of a three-city Canadian tour. But now, she’s attacking the university’s provost for an email he sent her, warning her that in Canada, free speech is defined differently than it is in the U.S. Coulter explains: “Now that the provost has instructed me on the criminal speech laws he apparently believes I have a proclivity [to break], despite knowing nothing about my speech, I see that he is guilty of promoting hatred against an identifiable group: conservatives.” Coulter adds: “I was hoping for a fruit basket upon my arrival in Canada, not a threat to criminally prosecute me.”

Champion of right-wing America lashes out at Canadian university

  1. Wow! Is any one actually interested in anything this "lady"has to say?

  2. Awww, princess. A private warning to an American known to make incendiary comments on the differences in hate speech law is entirely reasonable, and indeed, it was a kind gesture.

  3. can someone be kind enough to help Anne grasp difference between a letter outlining the differences between the treatment of free speech in the US and Canada and a threat to prosecute?

ps can anyone tell me why someone that can't grasp that on her own is worth a speaking tour?

  4. Hardly a champion of the American Right. More like its largest embarrasment.

    • I don't know, its a pretty tight race to the bottom.

  5. “I was hoping for a fruit basket upon my arrival in Canada, not a threat to criminally prosecute me.”

Whatever, lady. The letter was dumb, but if it wasn't for negative attention, poor Ms. Coulter would receive no attention at all.

  6. Anne, you and America are so deserving of each other. Hurry home. God speed.

    • Hey, that's not cool. No country is deserving of Ann Coulter.

  7. Self-deprecating humour really isn't the Left's strong suit, is it.

    • She has said some pretty racy things in the past; some things that an HRC might get a complaint over. I'm not saying that the HRC's are a good thing, but their existence is a reality.

Personally, if I was Ms. Coulter, I'd be thankful to know that I may want to leave out that bit about converting the Muslims. But then, she isn't really a conservative, she's just a publicity whore.

  8. I did not know that Coulter was a "champion" of anything. And no one speaks for me. Certainly no entertainer or politician. And that includes a jellyfished college administrator.

Too bad young Seamus the Shameful is incapable of wrangling with Ms Coulter intellectually.

He prefers to cravenly censoring what she has to say, but then, he has learned well from the spineless Houle of the University of Ottawa: if you cannot deal with a woman with intelligence, deal with them by silencing her.

I wonder if he uses crayons in his writing classes and moves his lips when he reads? And who were the nitwits who elected him and whether they feel a tinge of embarrassment?

  9. What is disturbing about this, but not at all unexpected, is that a Canadian University is more concerned by what words someone may or may not say instead of encouraging debate.

    • I don't believe that the university is responsible for the legislation that is in place. I don't believe that the university was enforcing the legislation.

I do believe that the university was trying to inform Ms. Coulter of the existence of the legislation, lest she inadvertently infringe upon it. Who the hell do they think they are, eh?

  10. She's obnoxious, but wherever did the provost get the idea their input was required, or even welcome?

    • It was an admittedly poorly executed CYA move by the provost.

  11. Deranged Conservative Victim Syndrome.

Enjoy your soapbox Ms. Coulter. Calls for religious genocide and in-your-face Christian Power doesn't resonate with most Canadians.

We also have freedom of choice and most Canadians will choose to ignore you; even if our media cannot.

  12. Free speech forever, Political Correctness never!
If this Communist, Trudeau-esque provost disagrees with Ann Coulter, he is free to present his case but he has no right to use intimidation to cause censorship. I'm sure he would never send a letter of this kind to an extreme leftist.

If the honorary N. Korean at Ottawa U. has a legal leg to stand on, the solution is to immediately throw out the ridiculous "hate speech" law and go back to real freedom of speech. We Canadians are not less than Americans and we have the right to express ourselves freely. The very fact that he feels free to write such a letter proves what many have suspected all along about "hate speech" laws, namely that they are a mechanism for censorship initiated by extreme leftisists who wish to silence the critics of their insane policies.

At the same time, ordinary University students have the right to go hear (or not hear) whoever they like without being intimidated by their local branch of the NDP-Hitler youth movement.

  13. We turned back Hussein Melon Head Obama’s mentor
Bill Ayers of Weather Underground at
the border…we want nothing with his kind of terrorists.

    Ann Coulter is welcome!

We are all sick and tired of the communist brainwashing
from our degenerate hippies in the media!!!

  14. Now I know why I cannot stand Canada.

    • But you can spell it so congratulations Sieg.
      Keep up the good work.

  15. Ann Coulter is amazing!

You cannot undo-years of "PC" indoctrination Ann. Their Dean of Education tells them what to think and it's too late for some so come home and help us fight against our newly developed socialist state—America will not be dictated to. We lead: we do not follow. If that is offense, so be it.

Sure wish Canada would join us instead of fighting against–real liberty is beautiful!!!!

  16. freedom of speech is also standing up for the speech you disagree with …ottawa u in particular is a joke because it is the only university outside of quebec that has a quebec separatist club ….many people would want to ban them seeing they want to break up the country .. but ottawa u with its large french population sympathizes with separatists

    • So ottawa u doesn't promote enough freedom of speech……..uhhhh, oh, wait a minute, no, no…….they allow too much freedom of speech? Never mind.

    • LOL?

"freedom of speech is also standing up for the speech you disagree with"

"many people would want to ban them seeing they want to break up the country .. but ottawa u with its large french population sympathizes with separatists"

You don't see the contradiction? Koooooolaid…

  17. Wow,I didn't know Canadians don't have free speech. That's a shame. That means that they don't have freedom. Awful. That's why I love the USA. We love our freedom.

    • hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahhah…oh you're serious?
      Wow that's sad!
I can think of a dozen countries with more freedom of speech than the US.
Of course if you don't agree with me you can always shoot me in the face so I suppose that's a form of freedom of speech.

      • A whole dozen?????….Name them for me please!

    • Hey buddy, you have a Whitehouse full of Socialists right now, so take it from me…keep a very close watch on your freedoms from here on in. All you have to do is take a close look up here in Canada to see what can happen if you give these clowns any kind of foothold! Also, don't pay any attention to my smug and judgemental fellow Canadians who love to bash the US. They are just little rodents yapping around the heels of the herd.I have friends, and family history in the US, and I don't appreciate the ever present snotty comments I see all too often. Trust me when I say it is only a small number of insecure little twerps who engage in this garbage! I can't wait to get back down south!!

    • You've clearly not heard of the Miller Test.

"The Miller test is the United States Supreme Court's test for determining whether speech or expression can be labeled obscene, in which case it is not protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and can be prohibited."

I'm not sure why the article has been removed, but here's a Google cached version.

Apparently you can give a speech fueled with hatred, but you can't talk about peoples' icky bits. Yay for free speech!

      • Yes, that must be why no one in the US ever talks about anything sex related, especially "icky bits".
Also no ever writes about them, makes jokes about them, photographs them, or displays them in clubs or on beaches.

Truly, they have a restrictive society down there.

        • I don't believe that I claimed that it didn't happen; simply that there was judicial precedent in place restricting free speech based on obscenity.

All kinds of speech that would fall within the purview of HRCs happens in Canada too.

  18. Anne who?

  19. I don’t recall Ann Coulter or any of the so-called champions of free speech heralding the right of the Dixie Chicks to speak out against the Iraq War or George W. Bush. In fact, when the lead singer of the band was getting death threats from people with “differing opinions on the matter”, the Fox news crowd was suggesting that it was unpatriotic to “dis” your President. Even people like Oprah suggested that her comments should not have been made outside the USA. Anyone who disagreed with the war learned quickly to keep their mouths shut even though the war supposedly was about fighting for democracy and the right to express one’s opinions freely.

Ann Coulter is an entertainer. She has gotten wealthy by being provocative and shocking. She makes racist remarks and then calls them “satire”. However, if someone says disrespectful something about Christianity, she questions their loyalty to their country. In Canada we prosecute Holocaust-deniers because they promote hatred. Was it wrong of the provost of the U of Ottawa to point this out to Ann Coulter who has a history of disrespecting other religions to the extreme?

  20. Hey'….it's a CANADIAN UNIVERSITY in Ontario…..what did she expect? Every loser hipppie who ever actually finished their education is now a University Professor. What did you think they were going to teach your kids?

Besides, all that protesting and stuff…..is a lot easier than math or thinking.

Funny how the University admins never admonish or warn Islamic extremists or terrorist supporters who show up each year for Israeli Apartheid Week.

Guess those speakers aren't considered offensive. Probably because the average CANADIAN University is run by people, and largely attended by people who share the same views.

think of that the next time you see a poll that feels the need to indicate that more supporters of the Liberal party than the Conservative Party has a University indoctrinati…er, education.
