Coyne v. Wells on the budget

  1. Why am I watching last week's clip again?

  2. Why am I watching last week's clip again?

    • Sorry, had Java turned off (video is OK, links are bad)

      • I tried the link, too. As fun as last week's video was, I didn't really need to load it again…

  5. Gentleman or rather ghosts of Team 12 past,

I guess it's time for that shot of tequila with a grain of salt, what a day!

I thought it was a very good budget, very sensible.

I was shocked when Layton said that he wasn't supporting the budget so fast my jaw dropped, that was a great moment, his supporters must feel really proud, he is such a good leader!

I do wonder if the Tories set this up, I am not sure, my guess is that they did intend to work with Layton but after the last few weeks it became apparent they couldn't work together anymore, there is no confidence on this government.

    I

    • This is going to be the let's get it over election, as it stands today there is no way the Harper government will lose, actually his chances are pretty good for a majority and I am sticking to my "crystal pepsi" analogy when it comes to Ignatieff, The battle is going to be how to prevent Harper from getting a majority, other than that they have nothing.

      I can't wait I am excited!!

  8. Coyne! WTH!*

You read a conservative budget that has a gem** that goes a little like this. We have been conducting strategic reviews for the past 4 years, but now we will magically target those reviews to get even more savings.
    How large are those savings?
This year none: we are handing the money out for the election,
Next year: lets pick a round number say $1 billion!
The year after that: you will have forgotten all this, so lets double it, $2 billion!
The year after that, you guessed it , $4 billion!

If you want to believe in leprechauns that is your prerogative, but that does not mean one has to be so gullible as to believe the stories they tell you. (A leprechaun's nuggets are fictitious or possibly pyrite.)

    On the other hand,
with the rapid creation of slang in modern society it is remotely possible that the meaning of gem has evolved, if you really meant:

**gem: a flagrant departure from reality, a false narrative to distract the listener:
see also: whopper, fairytale, fable, mistruth,

then your observations are bang on.

  10. Why isn't there a tax credit for people like me, who are sick of working for a living, but too proud to try and finagle some kind of compensation/workers/longterm or whatever and too lazy to figure out a better way to earn a living? Maybe they should up the macleans sub so you can afford to pay the bloggers? – i'd vote for that.

  12. "Strategic and Operating Review" They are using the 1994-99 Review to avoid lay-offs and use attrition/hiring freeze. What the PBO wants is how smaller depts. will be able to provide services and what will be cut plus $$$ reduction = hopefully $4 billion/year.

  14. "Progressive Decentralization" and "Rational Federalist" – like both those terms!!

JMHO but Harper's pragmatic and adaptable agenda has always been curbing the "nanny state", and his opponents quote comments he has made over the years in that respect. That is probably why you don't hear him making those kind of comments anymore.

The inter-provincial trade barriers will need a majority government to get anything done. When I lived in Ottawa in the '70's, there was always such outrage that Quebec tradespeople could work in Ontario but Ontario trades could not work in Quebec!

  16. Hey Paul, O/T but have you been following the APTN stories on Carson??? They are linking him to doing closed-door business with Shawn Atleo, claiming Carson was a bridge to Harper. Atleo just recently announced he would get rid of the Indian Act in five years – made many Bands very angry. This storey is getting strange, sounds like someone is out to get Atleo. You may wish to follow up.

"Based on emails written by Carson, the former Harper advisor said he planned to help Atleo scrap the Indian Act in exchange for his support in promoting an Ottawa-based water company named H2O Pros, which later created an entity called H2O Global Group to deal with Indian Affairs."
