Democrats launch sexy new ad, conservatives upset

A suggestive new ad launched by the Democrats in the final push leading up to the Nov. 6 presidential election stars Lena Dunham from the HBO show Girls, and has conservative Republican supporters all riled up.

In the ad, the language Dunham uses to talk about her “first time” makes it sound like she’s talking about sex. But, surprise, she’s talking about her first time voting for Barack Obama.

“Your first time shouldn’t be with just anybody. You want to do it with a great guy,” she tells the camera, as soft piano music plays in the background.

It becomes fairly apparent, however, that Dunham is talking about politics when she moves on to say things like, “You want to do it with a guy who brought the troops out of Iraq. You don’t want to do it with a guy who says ‘oh hey I’m at the library studying’ when really he’s out not signing the Lilly Ledbetter Act.”

Conservatives have been out in full force against the ad, with one Conservative blogger calling the ad “disgusting” and noting that Vladimir Putin had a similar ad that compared voting for the first time to losing virginity.

Conservative columnist John Podhoretz said, on Twitter: “I am a great admirer of Lena Dunham’s but I don’t think appealing to undecided voters in the Midwest is in her skill set.”

Notably, the ad makes a direct appeal to young women, just as polls show that Obama no longer commands his once-great lead with female voters.

And, just for fun, here’s the Russian ad this new ad is being compared to.
