Elizabeth May and Jason Kenney exchange Twitter fire over monument plan

CALGARY – A tweet mocking the federal government’s plan to help fund a national monument to the victims of communism has riled the federal minister of multiculturalism.

Jason Kenney and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May got into a brief Twitter tiff on Thursday after May noted there were no plans for a monument to the victims of capitalism.

“Perhaps that’s because no one was shot in the back while risking their lives to flee eastward over the Iron Curtain,” responded Kenney.

“Or perhaps that’s because free societies didn’t murder tens of millions in gulags, planned famines, etc.”

Asked about May’s tweet after an event in Calgary on Thursday, Kenney said as many as 100 million people were murdered in the last century by totalitarian communist regimes.

“For Elizabeth May to make light of that as some sort of cute political joke is grossly irresponsible,” he said. “It dishonours the memory of those people and the many millions of Canadians who fled communist regimes to enjoy Canadian freedom.”

May said in a statement that she had simply been making a satirical comment.

“I am questioning this relentless process of building monuments,” she said. “There are a lot of victims of a lot of `isms.’ Are we going to build monuments to all of them?”

A group called Tribute to Liberty is getting up to $1.5 million over two years from the federal government to build the memorial in Ottawa.

  1. Big reality
check needed here with Jason Kenney’s response to Elizabeth May’s tweet
over the Conservative governments decision to build a monument to the
victims of Communism when The Elephant – or should we say The Giant
Panda In The Room – is the surrender of Canadian sovereignty to a
Communist totalitarian regime through the proposed FIPPA trade deal.

  2. Really? I didn’t realize this country had a burning need to spend money on a monument commemorating the victims of communism. For what? Looks like Harper’s government has itself resorted to “sociology”. Talk about propaganda. Sickening.

  3. Perhaps Jason Kenney needs a good history lesson (not revised by the Conservative Party…). For starters, World War I was a capitalist imperialist war through and through. With how many millions killed? And it’s not too difficult to find facts about how the Western capitalist victors carved up the planet while sowing the seeds of World War II and ongoing carnage in the Middle East and Africa. (By the way, the Communists withdrew from that first world war, a move that resulted in an invasion of the Soviet federation by capitalist nations.) And how many millions killed in World War II, the war which was a boon to the rise of the military/industrial complex? You can’t tell me that capitalism is not responsible for the deaths of millions. And that’s just the wars…never mind the human toll of so-called peace time development.

    • “…a move that resulted in an invasion of the Soviet federation by capitalist nations.
Unless you’re talking about the Nazi invasion of WWII (hardly a coalition of “capitalist nations”), please enlighten us as to when capitalists invaded Russia.

  4. Okay…so the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan had “nothing” to do with capitalism. Nobody was “shot in the back” during either of those. Or WWII. Or during the West’s backing of Suharto. Or during Vietnam when capitalist countries supposedly bombed millions to stop the “domino effect”. And we all know how much capitalist legends Joe Kennedy and Prescott Bush just “hated” Hitler and the German model of economic recovery before Pearl Harbor.

I could forgive Kenney’s knee-jerk and transparent right wing agendas if he wasn’t so painfully and consistently stupid in the the most petulant manner possible. Can we have an Immigration Minister that doesn’t act like a spoiled toddler every time someone questions his vapid ideals?
