First we take Bismarck

Today’s WSJ front-page-quirky-story is about Russian academic Igor Panarin, who has made a bit of a name for himself predicting the imminent crackup of the USA:

Mr. Panarin posits, in brief, that mass immigration, economic decline, and moral degradation will trigger a civil war next fall and the collapse of the dollar. Around the end of June 2010, or early July, he says, the U.S. will break into six pieces — with Alaska reverting to Russian control.

This is not a new idea — declinists have been warning that America is on the verge of falling apart ever since the country first came together (Alan Dowd has a good survey article here ), and it was the central conceit of Neil Stephenson’s excellent Snow Crash. But what’s interesting about Panarin’s theory (and by “interesting” I mean “wacko”) is the way he sees the country being carved up:

California will form the nucleus of what he calls “The Californian Republic,” and will be part of China or under Chinese influence. Texas will be the heart of “The Texas Republic,” a cluster of states that will go to Mexico or fall under Mexican influence. Washington, D.C., and New York will be part of an “Atlantic America” that may join the European Union. Canada will grab a group of Northern states Prof. Panarin calls “The Central North American Republic.

This brings back memories of Canadian World Domination, the now-defunct website that, at one point, was the single most entertaining place on the web. Generals Claire and Jenny, are you out there? If so, please drop me a line.

First we take Bismarck

  1. Even if I believed the US was about to launch a second civil war, which I don’t, I think the States would form their own countries rather than join other nations separated by oceans.

Also, Panarin has forgotten about The Republic Of Cascadia that would be formed if Cali and a few other West Coast States broke from the rest of the US.

  2. Cascadia again! I remember in the late 60’s and early 70’s there was quite a bit of talk out here in BC about BC, Alberta, Washington, Oregon and maybe California getting together – strangely enough it is an intriguing idea when you get right down to it as there is more in common between west coasters in both Canada and the USA then with our and their east coasters – it would also be 1 hell of an economic engine. However it will never fly as nations are more about emotions than actual common sense considerations … then again stranger things have happened!

    • Y’all would have to consider picking up California’s potential impending bancruptcy.

  3. “…with Alaska reverting to Russian control.”
Not if Sarah Palin has anything to say about it!

  4. The effect on Canadian beer could be catastrophic if we have to annex Milwaukee.

    • I think Miller Brewing Co. itself comprises grounds for annexing Milwaukee. I mean, those Kosovo & Iraq excursions were justified by crimes against humanity & weapons of mass distruction.

  5. if this ridiculous scenario were even to be contemplated, it’s more likely Mexico would fall under Texas influence.

  6. I think the notion that California will be under Chinese influence is probably the most ridiculous notion – even if the US broke up. While having the highest Asian-American population other than Hawaii (a large proportion of that being non-Chinese), it seems odd that China, which has virtually no navy, and a weak air force relative to the US could exert overseas control of a state with the population of China within two years.

These predictions remind me more of Criswell (featured in Plan IX from Outer Space), who predicted Dolly Parton would become president in 1960.

    • When the US falls apart from flooding the system with worthless USD the US army will run out of funding. Or they will be directed inwards to hold off civil unrest although it’s more likely Canadian Soldiers will have to carry that burden through the S.P.P. and expect US military on our borders holding off illegal US infiltration.
China is quickly running out of room and resources and already feeling the pain of reduced exports to the US. The largest standing army will join forces (or simply strengthen ties) with Russia and be first in line in the US to pick up the pieces.
I truly hope this isn’t the case. You might want to start learning Chinese and Russian otherwise.

    • I don’t think the US Air Force has ever stood up well against the Chinese. Korean & Vietnamese wars, anyone? China may lose against opponents like the Vietnamese (post-US/Vietnamese war) & India, they’ve tend to do well against Russians & Americans in proxy conflicts. China & Russia have never played well together in peacetime.

With their stockpile of USD$$$ China has from propping the dollar over the last decade, it could pretty much BUY California.

I’ve already learned Chinese, but that was for fun & profit.

  7. Why the hell would Canada want to join a bunch of northen states. We’ve enough snow and trees of our own. An alliance with Mexico, at the least please.
