Former Guantanamo inmate leading Taliban’s fight against Canadians

Sources say Mullah Abdullah Zakir is a senior military commander in southern Afghanistan

A recently released inmate from the Guantanamo Bay detention centre is now leading the Taliban in southern Afghanistan, where some 2,500 Canadian soldiers are fighting the insurgency. Mullah Abdullah Zakir was transferred from Guantanamo to Afghan authorities in December 2007 and was subsequently released. Taliban sources have told the BBC that he is now their senior military commander in southern Afghanistan. British government officials say Mullah Abdullah operates openly out of the Pakistani city of Quetta.
