Greece’s Papandreou expected to resign

Government of national unity may follow PM’s resignation

Three more legislators said they oppose Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou’s plan to hold a referendum on euro membership, erasing the ruling Pasok socialist party’s parliamentary majority, the Financial Times reports. Pressure is mounting on Greece’s PM to resign, as the opposition calls for the formation of a government of national unity, which is expected to call off the referendum and accept foreign financial support. Elsewhere in the Financial Times, Yale professor Stathis Kalyvas offers an interesting analysis of the possible political calculus behind Papandreou’s decision to call for the referendum earlier this week.
