The little price was born to Kate and father Prince William at 4:24 p.m. He weighs 8lbs 6oz, according to a press release that was issued about four hours after the birth.
The child is now third in line to the throne, after Prince Charles and Prince William.
“Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight,” Kensington Palace said in a statement. The statement also said William was present for the birth.
Prince Charles is now a grandfather, and he released a statement saying he and Camilla were “overjoyed.”
“Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future,” Charles said in a statement.
Throughout the day, reporters camped outside the Lido Wing of London’s St. Mary’s Hospital after Kate was spotted entering the doors around 6 a.m. local time.
After the digital press release was issued, news of the child’s birth was placed on a golden easel outside Buckingham Palace.
