Jim Carrey releases anti-gun music video amid Twitter tirade

Comedian Jim Carrey has become the latest celebrity to speak against gun violence after he released an anti-gun music video on Monday.
In the video, which was posted to the site Funny or Die, Carrey performs as the lead singer of country group Lonesome Earl and the Clutterbusters, who sings that Charlton Heston (also played by Carrey) won’t be carried to heaven for his gun-toting ways.
“Only the devil’s true devotees/Could profiteer/From pain and fear,” Carrey sings.
And: “The angles wouldn’t take him up to heaven like he planned/Because they couldn’t pry that gun from his cold, dead hands.”
The release of the video came after a Twitter tirade Sunday, where Carrey called gun lobbiests “heartless motherf%ckers unwilling 2 bend 4 the safety of our kids.”

The move, however has garnered criticism from those who see Carrey’s music video as a publicity stunt, timed as his latest film, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, is in theatre.
The film has been panned by critics, including Maclean’s film critic Brian D. Johnson, who has this to say about The Incredible Burt Wonderstone:
“Keep your eye on the actors and you can almost forgive the script—a shambling mess created by half a dozen writers and directed by Don Scardino, a 64-year-old TV veteran making his first feature—but not quite. For a comedy, the laughs are too sporadic.”
