Liberal party needs more than just a “cute leader,” MP says
Liberal MP Justin Trudeau says he’s “undecided” about whether he wants to replace Michael Ignatieff as Liberal party leader after the party’s massive defeat in Monday’s election, the CBC reports. Trudeau is one of only 34 re-elected Liberal MPs, and says the party “saw this coming, although not this bad.” Ignatieff has resigned as party leader after losing his own seat. The the party is to choose an interim leader next week until a leadership convention can be held. Trudeau says that “a lot of people are turning to” him, maybe due to the legacy of his father, former prime minister Pierre Trudeau, and that it “concerns” him. “It’s not going to be fixed by picking a cute leader or the right leader or whatever,” he says. He called the Liberals’ resounding defeat a “collective failure” and said the party needs to be rebuilt.
