Lara Logan assaulted in Egypt

CBS correspondent suffered “sexual assault and beating”

Lara Logan, a correspondent for CBS news, was covering the celebration in Egypt the day Hosni Mubarak resigned. In the midst of their coverage of the events in Tahrir Square, she and her team were surrounded by a mob of 200 people. Logan was separated from her crew and “suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating” before a group of Egyptian women and soldiers came to her rescue. She returned to the United States where she is in the hospital recovering. Logan and CBS are refusing further comment at this time.

  1. …wow.

  2. Apparently some 65 Christians have been killed by Arabs in the middle east and nary a word from the left-wing press. Now one of their own found out the truth about a lot of these people. Not all, but a lot. A reality pill for all western reporters would sure help.

  3. I'm sorry, but the concerns of the Coptic Christians in Egypt HAVE been covered by the press, thoroughly. Also, your statement makes it sound like it's "Christians vs. Arabs". I have news for you…those terms are not mutually exclusive. The Coptic Christians ARE Arabs.

You suggest western reporters need a "reality pill". Can you tell me what you think it is they need to know?

  4. Oh…'some christians' have been killed by 'some Arabs'

    Very informative.

The 'truth about a lot of these people'…..hmmm. Is this because women are never assaulted and raped in NA?

Reporters go into war zones all the time, and are aware of the danger. Even from white christian folk.

    • Egyptians are not Arabs btw

    • Well Emily, rape in the mid East and south Asia is way more common than you might think. It also goes without punishment too. Don't believe me? Then get on tour and find out about what happens in the world and think about the term Man Love Thursdays.

      • Rape is more common in NA than YOU think.

        Goes without punishment too.

I've been off my back porch thanks.

Btw all humans are the same

  11. The barbarians who assaulted so viciously this courageous reporter should face their own home-grown punishment: hanging in the public square and bravo to these brave /Egyptian women who came to this woman's rescue. It's despicable and shows the cultural bias against women in these muslim countries. They do need sharia law-type punishment for such vicious animalistic and BARBARIC crimes!
    Shameful!

  13. Maybe Egypt and other countries do need a brutal dictator to keep their men in line–and prevent them from assaulting women….
On the other hand, American Superbowl mobs given the opportunity would probably do no better…
The thugs should be jailed for Life. The Cairo women should be thanked for saving this womans life probably….what misogynist culture! It was probably safer for women under Hosni than under the "democracy" of the mob….truly tragic.
Hope Lara gets better and stronger soon and that the thugs are found out and beaten to a hummous pulp….

    • How did you get from rioting and gang-rape in Cairo to American "mob" behavior at the Super Bowl? Did we all miss something in Dallas two weeks ago?

  15. Best wishes for Lara to recover and our prayers are with her. Let's hope Egyptian authorities devote 1/10000 of Mubarak's billion-dollar forture to identifying the pigs responsible for this barbaric act of women-hatred and disrespect for human life. Sad…..are these guys really ready for Democracy???

    • No, but they are ready to hate Westerners and non-Muslims.

  17. Can we lay off the giggly "Unruly middle eastern mobs are benevolent and awesome because they've heard of Twitter" tone of coverage now?

  19. Sounds like Egypt is not such a nice place for women even when things are normal. The Egyptian women who helped rescue Lara are heroines. Until women are empowered there will be no democracy in the ME.

"One 2008 study said 86 per cent of Egyptian women — and 98 per cent of foreign women — reported that they were regularly harassed, with fully 62 per cent of men admitting to doing it.

It is unusual for a woman to make it to work in the morning without being assaulted in some way, so much so that the two front cars of every Cairo subway train are reserved for women only.

This is just a day in the life of Egyptian women. The country is famous for its casual brutality toward its female citizens. Women's groups call groping a national “cancer.”

Women's groups have set up a new tool named HarassMap to mark the worst leering and fondling sites in the city and let women (and men) text message and post notices on social media sites about their assaults."

    • can't speak for Egypt, in 'Stan the women are so low in status that they are considered unclean and boys are sometimes are more desirable

    • Leo, this is a bit of an aside but did you ever notice that it is women who regularily intervene when violence is being perpetrated on a child or another women in a public venue. They often have hidden cameras on shows like 20/20 – just to see what the public will do and it is always the women who stop and help someone who is being bullied. I really think what these women did to help Ms. Logan, while heroic, is fairly typical of females.

  23. There were Coptic Christians in the square. Do not spread ignorance to support your bias Judge.

  24. Geez Joe – you set a fine example of western civilization.

  25. So, Sharia law when it suits you. When it's suitably vengeful for crimes you find suitably barbaric. Gotcha.

  26. I agree, Sharia law will be hell on earth. Actually Sharia does very little to protect women.

  27. I agree, Sharia law will be hell on earth. Actually Sharia does very little to protect women.

  28. Actually, Copts are not Arab, but rather the true Egyptians that remain from the Arab invasion of Egypt that happened many years ago. Some actually still speak their ancient language.

  29. No, but they are ready to hate Westerners and non-Muslims.

  30. "Blaming the victim?" DAMN RIGHT!!! What the heck was she thinking? If you put yourself in a situation where something could happen to you, then you have no one else to blame.

If I walk through East Hastings in Vancouver at 2:00am waving wads of $100 bills in my hands and someone mugs me, was it stupid of me to do, or should I just say "I have the right to do this" and rely on principle to keep me safe?

People have to take ownership for their personal safety. This woman did not do that, and in fact put herself in the middle of the danger. Was this woman stupid? DAMN RIGHT!!! And it is hard to feel sorry for stupid people.

    • By ur comments i think that u are an example of a unwise analist of our modern world.I tthink that a lot of males and females are cavemans with car keys and cellular phones(thechnology),especially in some cultural environnement where differences between sexes are significant.Lara Logan is a brave correspondant for CBS and she was only doing her job, probably with a lot of pride for the egyptians who have fighted for their freedom. But now lets hope that the Cavemans wont rule the country and that they will be catched by more civilized peoples….Sorry about my english cause im french

      • "waving $100 bills" and existing in life as a female are two totally different things. If you think BEING female is the same as "waving money " you not only have a lot to learn about society but your analogies need some work too.

        • They attacked Anderson Cooper too and I am sure he would have gotten raped if they hadn't gotten him out of there. Yes, while Anderson is also an attractive individual, I think this is more about feelings these attackers have toward westerners in general. Rape is about power.

          • I don't define rape as power. That is modern feminism/gynocentric views making you think that way. Rape has been part of human survival for millions of years. Men are bigger than women for a reason. Nothing has changed in millions of years except that the genes with the greatest sex drive have been passed on, and those with weak sex drives have been eliminated. We still have a strong biological need to have sex, it is part of our DNA. That will never go away. Since society has created paper laws regarding rape, rape has been replaced with "the game", as in "don't hate the player, hate the game".

We are all protected by a piece of paper. When society collapses, our natural human survival instincts emerge (as we have seen in Egypt, New Orleans, war zones). Survival of the fittest.

So when society collapses, don't start waving $100 bills around.

Don't hate the truth, hate your own blind ignorance.

        • Truth hurts sometimes Sweetie, but a fact is a fact, if you have something someone else needs, then there is a chance they will take it if they can get away with it.

    • Your analogies display a clear set of prejudices: sure, I wouldn't walk through the Downtown Eastside at 2 AM flashing money (if only), but neither would I walk through yuppy Kitsilano or wealthy Point Grey at 2 AM doing the same thing.

Flashing money in an impoverished area and being sexually assaulted are not the same thing by a long way. By your own argument, you would rape a woman if you felt you could get away with it because it would be her fault for "being stupid" – or, in more sane words, for daring to have a vagina. Wow. Just wow.

  32. She's a Liberal, she can justify the assault on herself by blaming hegemonic western imperialism for angering poor backwards locals, it's not their fault of course, nothing is their fault in the eyes of Liberals because Liberals don't believe those people can ever rise to their exalted level of consciousness.

    • Actually, she's not a liberal. She's been pretty much pro-Pentagon all of her career. So before you wax idiotic regarding Liberals, do a bit of research.

      • 'pro-Pentagon' means something to you? Liberals are so easy to wax.

        • Seeing as you clearly don't understand, I'll explain. 'Pro-Pentagon' means there is no questioning of defense spending or defense decisions…you just parrot what they say. And as for 'Liberals' do you ever hear arch-conservatives apologize for anything? 'Elites' are anyone smarter than today's neo-conservative, which is a healthy slice of the population. I personally wouldn't let them handle sharp scissors or go out without a string connecting their mittens. You obviously missed that US study done last year that clearly showed Fox News viewers to be a) the least well-informed, and b) most likely to believe what they were being told without questioning it.

  34. I can't imagine the fear, emotional and mental problems/scars she is facing from this experience. Thanks for those women and soldiers with conscience who helped her, or it could have been worse.

    • maybe we should put metal underwear on our women reporters and protect them more, when travelling to these unkept countries where barbarians reside. as much as i hate an eye for an eye, cuz it makes evryone blind, if I was there i would stone them myself. the men that did this. may god give justice to the innocent.
