Liberals complain their voters are being harassed

Late-night telephone calls the work of ‘another party,’ says Grit candidate

The Liberal party says it is investigating reports by at least seven of its candidates that constituents in their ridings have been subjected to rude phone calls from telemarketers pretending to be Liberal operatives. “[Voters] are calling our office saying people are being rude with them,” Ray Simard, the Liberal candidate in St. Boniface, told reporters on Tuesday. “They (the telemarketers) call them at weird times of the night … and we are checking into it.” Simard added the calls were “obviously” the work of “another party.” Toronto Liberal candidate Joe Volpe has complained of similar incidents in his riding. In another sign the race is turning nasty, Liberal campaign worker Rachpal Grewal was arrested and charged with tpossession of stolen property after police allegedly found Conservative campaign signs in his truck.

  1. Probably what the soldiers in the streets do when they put down their guns and retire for the night…to earn O/T making prank phone calls.

  3. A similar thing has been occuring in Gail Shea's riding and in Conservative candidate Dr. Bruce Pretty's riding of Halifax-West. There have been "[r]eports of mysterious phone calls to voters in the riding, suggesting they are able to vote online or by email in the federal election."

  5. Libs are whiny losers. Complaining about dirty tricks on the day one of their people is charged. I thought Libs were supposed to be rising up against this type of behaviour, not engaging in it.

"A Liberal worker accused of ripping off a Tory opponent's signs will face a court nine days after the federal election, police said.

The arrest of incumbent Brampton-West MP Andrew Kania's worker was revealed Monday by Mitch Wexler, Conservative opponent Kyle Seebeck's campaign manager." QMI, Apr 19 2011

    • Uh… I don't see how wrongdoing on the part of a LPC campaign worker makes it ok for somebody to impersonate the LPC and harass voters.

Two dirty tricks don't make a right.

      • Two dirty tricks don't make it right but they certainly make for a more interesting campaign.

I thought story linked to here was Delacourt's piece on how only Libs are experiencing dirty tricks and dirty tricks only started in 2006 when Harper was elected, apparently. Dirty tricks make elections interesting and have been going on for as long as humans have been holding elections.

Whining about crank phone calls is just three year old behaviour.

Is your refrigerator running? …… yes …… you better go catch it!

ps I did quick google search for election fraud and there was an interesting essay by Elections Canada on frraudulant practices that would make your toes curl. We forget, but in many ways, our political system is significantly cleaned up compared to way back when.

        • Yeah, dirty tricks make for an interesting campaign and they're nothing new.

If you watch US elections at the local level, the dirty tricks are way beyond merely interesting. Flyers, anonymous phone calls, shadowy third-party groups… by remaining separate from the political parties they're free to spread lies, racist innuendo, rumours, etc.

The CPC didn't introduce attack ads to Canada, but has adopted them in American style and quantity. If they do the same with dirty tricks, well, that's just one more aspect of our political system that they'll make worse.

      • I doubt if the 'phoney' calls have any connection to the NDP, Tories, or Grits. It is probably the work of some group of radical wing-nuts like the Coalition Against Poverty.

        • I'm guessing that you have no evidence whatsoever, correct?

          • "The CPC didn't introduce attack ads to Canada, but has adopted them in American style and quantity. If they do the same with dirty tricks, well, that's just one more aspect of our political system that they'll make worse."

And the pot calls the kettle black. Your baseless accusations against the Tories aren't supported by even the slightest of evidence. We are both speculating. If strong evidence existed the RCMP would currently be making arrests. All we know is that both the Tories and the Grits have been targeted with these phoney calls.

Radical wing-nuts like the Coalition Against Poverty have a long history of vandalism and general mischief. It would not come as a surprise if such individuals would employ tactics such as these to play the Tories and Grits off each other in the hopes that the NDP (the lesser of three evils in their minds) would come up the middle.

          • New information was just released. The CBC are reporting that the phoney Liberal calls came from a call centre located in the US.

"The number traces to a cellphone number in North Dakota, and a message at the other end says it is a call centre. CBC has not been able to confirm who is behind the calls, the number, or whether the number is simply a "spoofed" caller ID."

          • Guessing that you ignore the evidence that the Grits run attack ads.

  10. 9 days in jail,
i wonder how much time one would get, when he/she spray paints cross-hair on the forehead of Liberal campaign signs (maybe 100 of them) " Sarah Palin" style!

    • Tampering with signs by campaign workers only normally extends to their removal (this is the most expedient and effective way to diminish a candidate's presence). When signs are vandalized it is normally the work of the same vandals that regularly deface/destroy property in the area; however, the spray-painted cross-hair incident is peculiar in that it suggests a certain unsophisticated political motivation.

  12. "obviously" the work of "another party" – speculation
"arrested and charged" – not speculation

Where are all the folks who were howling about someone reaching for a ballet box? They seemed to me like they wanted to protest this sort of thing. Wait, it was a Liberal who was charged, so for this one, we will move the goalposts.

Typical. Why can't we all just agree that some things are wrong. Some people in each party will do things that are wrong. Now lets worry about the election issues that matter. . .

Notice I didn't allude to, or suggest, that Ignatieff knew, or told the person, to steal the signs. Because he probably didn't. I deal with facts, not slander.

    • OK; I'll say it – If the campaign worker is guilty, then he deserves what he gets. The National Post has the following quote from the candidate: “This is a serious matter,” Mr. Kania said. “We expect volunteers to follow the law, period.”
      http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/04/19/liberal-v

Removal of the signs is against the law. The accused is saying that the signs were planted in his unlocked vehicle. We'll see where that gets him.

Dirty tricks and lawbreaking, no matter which party, is wrong. Workers who do this of their own initiative need to be tossed and turned over to authorities. Candidates who know they have campaigners doing these things and do nothing to stop it are guilty by association.

Notice I didn't say Kania knew, or told the person, to steal the signs. Same deal with the ballot box incident. You can't hold a party responsible for the actions of one volunteer, unless it can be shown the party knew in advance the action would be taken.

Unless it's the CPC, and then you can blame PM Harper.

        • I am assuming that was sarcasm . . .?

  21. New Democrat Leader Jack Layton accused the Liberals of playing dirty tricks against one of his star candidates in Quebec and called it a sign of desperation.“These are personal attacks,” Layton told reporters in Toronto on Tuesday when asked about a report that Francoise Boivin, the former Liberal MP turned NDP candidate in the western Quebec riding of Gatineau, was pushed out of her former party.Montreal newspaper Le Devoir reported Tuesday that Boivin did not actually leave the party for ideological reasons as she has previously stated, but because she hired a woman to work in her office the Liberals say was her same-sex partner and then refused to acknowledge she had broken the rules. The newspaper says that when the party questioned her about it, Boivin claimed the woman was her roommate and the Liberals asked her to leave. – see TGM

Boivin flatly denied the allegations, saying that she knows all the rules and she never broke them.

  24. What's your beef with OCAP? Seems kinda random; do they have any history of election-related shenanigans?

You should check the definition of "accusations" and reread what I wrote.

  26. So, a card carrying Liberal is given prison time, and you lead with a fantasy about make believe crank callers targeting poor Liberal voters?

    Wow….just, Wow!

  27. So, a card carrying Liberal is given prison time, and you lead with a fantasy about make believe crank callers targeting poor Liberal voters?

    Wow….just, Wow!

    • who got prison time now?

    • Prison time? Not likely. It's not like the guy is a Native. Now, Natives all have a price tag on their heads with Harper's minimum sentencing and Texas style mega prisons. I'm guessing the same corporations that put all the black people in Texas prisons are drooling over the opportunity to do it to our natives. And with social cutbacks they will have an endless amount of cliental.

It's like owing a hotel that is always full and no one leaves. Where can I get a piece of that investment?

If Harper gets a majority – just imagine. Bring back the death penalty; get rid of gay marriage and abortion, 4 year fixed term elections, go to a two party system, mega prisons for the poor and mentally ill and tens-of-thousands of illegal immigrants due to the adopted American/Mexican style policy.

Canada will be just like Texas – Yeeh Hahh, partner. Now lets all start inbreeding!!!!

      • Whammerjammer are you off your meds again?

  28. who got prison time now?

  29. Looks like a Liberal idiot does

  30. Who's making the calls? Possible scenarios:

Conservatives are making them, trying to elicit a Liberal backlash. (Occam's razor)
Liberals are making them, and then blaming the Conservatives (fiendishly clever)
NDP'ers are making them, to reflect badly on both the other parties while staying squeaky clean (pretty twisted)

Or else someone outside the system who hates politics and partys.

    Will we ever know?

  32. Seriously? regardless of stripes, have you ever seen someone so blatantly lie day in & day out straight to your face the way Stephen Harper does?.

I helped vote this thing into power & am completely blown away ever time I see a clip of his fear mongering campaign each & every day of this campaign, its unbelievable, literally!.

I've voted Conservative, PC, NDP & Liberal over my years so please don't assume I'm just an ABC person, I'm not. but this guy is by far the lowest of the low I've ever seen, straight out of the American playbook of say anything to scare people into following you, regardless of TRUTH & HONOR.

I find it just sickening as a proud Canadian.
