Lockout looms at Bettman sets deadline

Fans beware: the NHL is facing a lockout.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has set a deadline of Sept. 15 for a a new collective bargaining agreement between players and owners, the CBC reports. That leaves 37 days of brinkmanship before fans gets shafted.

Bettman said “time is getting short and the owners are not prepared to operate under this collective bargaining agreement for another season, so we need to get to making a deal and doing it soon.” Meanwhile, player rep Donald Fehr said  “there is a meaningful gulf” between the parties.

On the bright side, a lockout will save Sydney Crosby from the risk of injury. Then again, it is never fun watching rich players do battle with richer owners.
