Malcom McLaren, dead at 64

Former Sex Pistols manager was instrumental in bringing punk to the masses

Macolm McLaren, the colourful former manager and impressario behind the Sex Pistols died in New York Thursday after what is believed to have been a battle with cancer. McLaren’s relationship with Britain’s punk scene dates back to his establishment of a clothing store in London with then-wife, designer Vivienne Westwood, in the 1970s. The shop, eventually named “Sex”, came to define British punk fashion and was a focal point of London’s early punk scene. McLaren would go on to manage other bands like the New York Dolls and Bow Wow Wow, as well as produce his own records. But it was his controversy-courting tenure as the Sex Pistols manager—an episode that ended spectacularly badly—that put him on the map. McLaren was 64.
