More middle-class women turning to cocaine

Number treated for addiction has doubled in two years

A British report by the National Drug Treatment Monitoring System says the number of women getting help for a cocaine addiction has doubled in two years. According to statistics by the Ministry of Justice, 2,923 women sought treatment for cocaine in Britain last year. The numbers also report a shocking five-fold increase in the number of women given warnings for possession of the drug. Addiction treatment specialists say part of cocaine’s allure is the glamour and social status associated with it as the drug of choice for celebrities. And although many women know of the health risks involved, some addiction specialists say women feel compelled to use it because they are working in competitive environments where they feel stressed in order keep up.
