RCMP officer says he failed to properly follow up on reports of SOS signals
You don’t often hear cops apologize—least of all members of the RCMP. But a senior officer in Golden, B.C. has offered an unreserved apology to the family of Marie-Josee Fortin, the Quebec woman who died after she and her husband, Gilles Blackburn, got lost during a ski trip. At a town council meeting in Golden last night, Staff Sgt. Marko Shehovac admitted he failed to properly follow up on reports of SOS signals Fortin and her husband left in the snow. “For this, I am truly sorry to Mr. Blackburn, his family and friends,” he said. This may wind up costing the RCMP: goodness knows apologies are invitations for lawsuits these days. And it’s not clear whether Shehovac obtained clearance from headquarters before speaking his piece.
