NDP calls for resignation of immigration minister

Jason Kenney’s fundraising letter lands him in hot water with the opposition

Federal Immigration Minister Jason Kenney is coming under fire from the NDP after they were accidentally sent a fundraising letter addressed to Conservative MPs detailing a media strategy that would target ethnic communities. The letter, which Kenney’s office likely intended for Conservative MP John Duncan but accidentally sent to NDP MP Linda Duncan, asked MPs to raise funds for an ad campaign that would bolster Tory support among South Asian and Chinese communities in the GTA. The media plan, entitled “Breaking Through: Building the Conservative Brand,” outlined data showing voting patterns among South Asian and Chinese communities, has statements like “If GTA South Asians were to form a city, it would be the third largest city in the country,” and asks Conservative ridings to raise $200,000 for the strategy. The employee who sent the letter has resigned and Kenney has apologized, but the NDP is calling for him to resign for abusing his privileges as an MP by conducting partisan fundraising.
