Nigel Wright speaks out, insists he never broke the law

OTTAWA – Nigel Wright, Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s former chief of staff, is defending his actions in light of new RCMP allegations that he committed breach of trust by writing a $90,000 cheque on behalf of Sen. Mike Duffy.

In a statement, Wright says: “My intention was always to secure repayment of funds owed to taxpayers. I acted within the scope of my duties and remain confident that my actions were lawful. I have no further comment at this time.”

Nigel Wright speaks out, insists he never broke the law

  1. He just called Harper a liar.

  2. “On our side there is one person responsible for this deception and that person is Mr. Wright by his own admission.”

How can you be acting within the scope of your duties if the PM says you were responsible for a deception?

I think Harper will have to back track on this one

    • Maybe his job description included “You shall be responsible for deceiving the public, and shall take a dive for the good of the PM in the event you are caught.”

      • That’s what it say now anyway. Maybe Nigel didn’t get that memo? Maybe that’s not a surprise? Poor Nigel, the ultimate fall guy. At what point will his loyalty waver i wonder? Maybe at the point he thinks Harper is the principle danger to the overall Conservative cause?

  3. That makes Harper a liar. Not that we didn’t already know that. This has a long way to go before it’s over and I’m sure Harper will be consistent and give us more scandals. He’s such a traitor to us, the Canadian people.

  4. The reason this happened is because Mike Duffey, who is over 18 & responsible for his actions, not others, got ‘bailed out of his predicament’. That is the initial cause & it mushroomed.

    • Of course you are right about the source. Unfortunately for the PMO, Nigel as well being over 18 and responsible acted badly, I suspect as directed. As this all plays out and Wright sprouts the wings of a canary, no finer friend will Justin Trudeau have to drive him to his new Sussex Drive address .I just wish that Justin will grow up soon and quit beating on the Conservatives so much. They are already suffering with Rob Ford, Tim Hudak as Ontario Leader, and the Senate 3. There’s no reason to go over-board about things.

  5. I don’t see how Wright is guilty unless it can be proven that his payment to Duffy came with actual and substantial strings attached. Is that known (via evidence)?
