Now updated with link to full video: No apologies from Romney

Mitt Romney is offering no apologies after a video surfaced of the Republican presidential candidate saying that 47 per cent of Americans will vote for Obama no matter what, “47 per cent who are with him, who are dependent upon government.”

Romney said Monday evening that while his comments weren’t “elegantly stated,” they showed the difference between Obama’s government-guided society, and his belief in the free market.

Mother Jones obtained the video from a YouTube uploader who had put the video up months ago. They released the original just hours after Romney’s campaign outlined a new strategy for its struggling campaign.

In the video, Romney states:

“There are 47 per cent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 per cent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax…[M]y job is is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

Romney has called for a release of the full video, and not just the clips available online.

Early Tuesday afternoon, Mother Jones released the full video.
