Nova Scotia bishop may have done more than download child porn

Raymond Lahey is accused of fondling 10-year-old boy

Raymond Lahey, the Nova Scotia bishop who was arrested last year on child pornography charges, is now accused of sexually abusing a 10-year-old boy. According to a statement of claim filed in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador, the victim, Todd Boland, says he was repeatedly fondled over his clothes in the mid-1980s, while Lahey was the vicar-general of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. John’s. Greg Stack, Boland’s lawyer, said the child porn charges spurred his client to come forward. “An awful lot of victims of sexual abuse just try to bury it in their subconscious,” Stack said. “Any priest or figure like that is a godlike figure, I suppose, having been brought up Roman Catholic.” The lawsuit comes as the Vatican continues to be hammered by new revelations of clergy abuse—and systemic cover-up.

  1. The person initiating the civil lawsuit against Bishop Lahey has a criminal record and blames this on what he supposedly experienced (sexual abuse from the Bishop) during his childhood. I very much doubt there is a straightforward cause for Mr. Boland's criminal record — it seems to me he is merely making an excuse for the poor choices he has made in his life. Turning to crime is a choice — nobody twisted his arm to turn to crime. Not that this excuses Bishop Lahey either — anyone abusing a child should be brought to justice.

  2. In what way does this matter qualify for a public opinion? There are numerous instances of religious people of other denominations who are also guilty of similar misbehaviour but those stories are not reported by you. I guesss you need to publish such trash for reasons best known to you. I draw my own conclusions.
Read the article by Mr.Sam Miller about all that the Catholic Church does for the nation and if you have the courage publish that article also.

  3. The comments by Yola and Stan above attempt to discount this brave soul's testimony after so many years. Shame on you! Bouland is not blaming his behaviour on anything; he is shedding light on this aweful man who pretends to be a respectable religious role model.
