Obama takes on Romney at annual correspondents’ dinner

“It’s great to be here this evening in the vast, magnificent Hilton ballroom, or what Mitt Romney would call a little fixer-upper,” was one of President Barack Obama’s opening lines at Saturday’s White House annual Correspondents’ Dinner, Slate reports.

“It’s great to be here this evening in the vast, magnificent Hilton ballroom, or what Mitt Romney would call a little fixer-upper,” was one of President Barack Obama’s opening lines at Saturday’s White House annual Correspondents’ Dinner, Slate reports.

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was the target of most of Obama’s jokes at the gala attended by over 2,000 guests from the media. One of his jabs took aim at both Romney and former Republican contender Rick Santorum, who once suggested highly educated Americans were elitists. Speaking about his rival in this year’s election, the president said: “We both have degrees from Harvard. I have one, he has two. What a snob.” Santorum gave the president two thumbs up for the joke.

Some of the president’s  best jokes according to Politico:

Four years ago, I was locked in a brutal primary battle with Hillary Clinton. Four years later, she won’t stop drunk-texting me from Cartagena.

Our chaperone for the evening is Jimmy Kimmel. (…) Jimmy got his start years ago on ‘The Man Show.’ In Washington, that’s what we call a congressional hearing on contraception.

In my first term, we passed health care reform. In my second term, I guess I’ll pass it again.

And some of Kimmel’s best jokes (he didn’t spare Romney, either):

Remember when the country rallied around you in hopes of a better tomorrow? That was hilarious.

Democrats would like you to stick to your guns. And if you don’t have any guns, you can ask Eric Holder to get some for you.

On Mitt Romney: You can’t have a beer with him, because he doesn’t drink. You can’t have a cup of coffee with him, because he can’t have caffeine. You can’t even play Monopoly with him because he keeps trying to put the dog on the car.
