Obama vows to make BP pay

U.S. president slams BP’s “recklessness” in prime time address

In his first address to the nation from the Oval Office, US President Barack Obama vowed that he’d make BP pay for its “recklessness.” “We will fight this spill with everything we’ve got for as long it takes,” he said. “We will make BP pay for the damage their company has caused. And we will do whatever’s necessary to help the Gulf Coast and its people recover from this tragedy.” He also used the opportunity to remind Americans that they must embrace a clean energy future. It’s been nearly two months since the oil spill began, and critics have chided Obama for not doing enough to fix the leak.

  1. I can't blame Obama for "not doing enough to fix the leak". He's a statesman, not an engineer. All he can do is lean on BP, or if BP seems to be dragging their feet, take full control of the situation and put the Army Engineers on it (which is not a good option – BP has more familiarity and expertise).

What I do blame him for, though, is not doing enough to help coastal states protect their shores from the spreading spill. Louisiana's Governor Jindal requested booms for off-shore protection within days of the original spill; it took weeks for the Obama Administration to respond to that request and as I understand it Jindal still has not received most of what he requested. That's inexcusable.
