Ontario squandered $1 billion on eHealth

Scandal at agency costs provincial health minister his job

Ontario Health Minister David Caplan has resigned from his post, announcing he would step down just a day before the release of an auditor general’s report detailing the mismanagement involved in Ontario’s 10-year attempt to create electronic health records. According to the report, “Ontario taxpayers have not received value for money with this $1 billion investment” in eHealth Ontario. The report was commissioned after it was revealed the agency had handed out multi-million dollar contracts without going through a proper tendering process and was paying exorbitant fees to consultants. Auditor General Jim McCarter found the program was indeed rife with “favouritism.” Opposition parties have been criticizing Dalton McGuinty’s Liberal government and demanding Caplan’s removal since the controversy came to light in June.
