Ottawa won’t rule out Quebec City arena project

Conservative minister says ‘door is not closed’

The federal government made it clear on Thursday it hasn’t ruled out funding the construction of an NHL arena in Quebec City. “My Quebec caucus colleagues and I support the amphitheatre project,” Josée Verner, the Conservatives’ minister for Quebec City, told reporters, “and the door is not closed with the federal government, far from it.” All three federal opposition parties support the project, which appeared to get boost last weekend when Pierre-Karl Péladeau, the presumptive owner of a the provincial capital’s hypothetical NHL franchise, said he’d be prepared to put “tens of millions of dollars” into the arena project. However the issue of government funding has proved divisive inside the federal Conservative caucus.

  1. Let’s see, we can’t get anything close to good healthcare, so let’s head to the arena and watch hockey. Perhaps they could add nursing stations near the snack bar or surgeries near the bathrooms so we can have an all-in-one trip.

NO WAY do I want my tax money going to more hockey. Ugh.

  3. Well, municipalities across Canada, get your pet projects in order, because when they decide to fund this, they'll have to dole out cash to every bloody location so no one feels left out.

    • Don't be silly! They will only qualify if located within Quebec's (or maybe Alberta's) borders.

  6. I wish she would just shut up. Mayor Labeaume does not need federal funds on this, has almost the whole thing financed already without the federal.

Either she has been misquoted or she lives in her own little world.

  12. -i think it is ridiculous that the gov.t would even consider such an investment to suck up to the PQ party.
    – what then, they can resume their waste of time/energy and tax payers money on seperation NO we cannot give them cash
-let them FEEL what it is like ….to be alone
-and it is not even sure the NHL will allow a franchise
    – i am still waitng for the FED's reasons why they would even consider donating to this absurd idea, which failed because of no fan support anyway
( YES QUEBECERS- now you can be part of – should i dare say– CANADA – again–for a price-)
